SAUSAGE SUCCESS FOR LANCASHIRE BUTCHER

A butcher from Lancashire has been honoured with a prestigious award.

Ye Olde Sausage Shop produced an array of fantastic meat products to receive eight gold and two silver awards at the BPEX Product Evaluation Roadshow. In addition, they were also awarded the Champion title for their ‘Beef & Horseradish Mustard Sausage’ in the Lamb or Beef Sausage category.

Based at Oswaldtwistle Mills in Accrington, Ye Olde Sausage Shop were among 62 butchers in the North West to submit more than 260 products for judging by industry experts. The BPEX event, which took place at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton last week, rewards product excellence across twelve categories.

Seventeen year-old Jessica Leliuga, who began working at the butchery as Saturday staff at 13 years-old, claimed three of the shops gold awards for entries she put forward for the Young Sausage Maker category. She said: “It was fantastic to find out I had achieved a gold award for every sausage I personally entered into the roadshow. I have actually been making sausages for four years now and really enjoy it. We have between 15 and 18 different varieties available on a daily basis.

“I decided to go full time at the shop when I left school, even though I refused to touch any of the meat when I first joined. I’m very thankful to my cousin Martin Teese, who owns the business, for giving me the opportunity to find a career that I’m now really passionate about. Additionally with his support I have also just passed a Level 2 NVQ in butchery, and we are now looking at other courses I can take to broaden my skills even further.

“We were also of course thrilled to find out that we had been awarded champion of the Lamb or Beef sausage category once more. We held the same title in 2009, but lost it to someone else last year, so it was great to get it back again, especially after the work the whole team put in.”

BPEX butchery and product development manager, Keith Fisher, said: “We had a superb turnout at Bolton and the results clearly speak for themselves. The standard of entry was incredible and this is reflected in the number of awards achieved – almost half of which were gold.

“It is fantastic to see so many independent and high street butchers and farm shops represented, with such a wide array of quality products. The feedback from judges is that butchers in the region continue to raise the bar when it comes to producing fantastic meat products. Crucial to this is encouraging young people into the trade and we were delighted to see such skill in Jessica – we wish her well.”

The Product Evaluation Events are organised by BPEX and recognise and reward product excellence and innovation among butchers. The judges use the following criteria: overall appearance; size and colour; ease of cutting; texture and structure; and most importantly taste and smell.
